Giving Opportunities

Sri Lanka: Formerly known as Ceylon, Sri Lanka is a beautiful island nation in the Indian Ocean off the southeastern coast of India. Most of the people are Sinhalese who practice Buddhism. About 17 percent are Indian Tamils who practice Hinduism.

India Hoeppner Support
David and Beth Hoeppners are long-term missionaries in India and Sri Lanka, where they serve as educational consultants working with the India Evangelical Lutheran Church (IELC), the LCMS partner church in India. Your support enables the Hoeppners to equip the IELC to share Jesus’ love with the children of India.

India/Sri Lanka Hoefer Support
Rev. Dr. Herbert Hoefer serves half-time with LCMS World Mission. Herb is area director for India and Sri Lanka, developing mission strategy in those two countries. He also holds the mission chair at Concordia University, Portland, Ore., teaching there and serving part-time as mission consultant for the Northwest District. Herb is married to Carol, and they have three daughters. Help the Hoefers to serve God as His missionaries.

Sri Lanka Consultants
LCMS World Mission contracts LCMS theologians to visit Sri Lanka every year to provide in-service training for the pastors, evangelists and lay leaders of the Lanka Lutheran Church (LLC). LCMS World Mission also expects to conduct a Spoken English Workshop using LCMS lay volunteers, for whom in-country expenses will be provided. The LLC has begun a one-year lay missionary training program and it has asked for outside expertise in teaching the trainees.

Sri Lanka Lay Missionary Training Program
Many young men in the Lanka Lutheran Church (LLC) have expressed a desire to be trained for evangelistic work. The LLC has developed a one-year lay missionary training program, with 10 young men already enrolled. After the training, they will be sent into unchurched areas around the tea plantations in the hill area of Sri Lanka. LCMS world Mission will provide some of the theological personnel for this training, both from the LCMS and from India.

Sri Lanka Literature
Our partner church, the Lanka Lutheran Church (LLC), lacks many essentials for its church life: Bibles, hymnals, catechisms, tracts, etc. We have been trying to provide these Lutheran resources from those produced by the India Evangelical Lutheran Church, since the IELC has materials available in the Tamil language also spoken in Sri Lanka. The LLC congregations also need musical instruments and training in leading worship services. You can help provide these needed resources!

Sri Lanka Salary Subsidies
The Lanka Lutheran Church (LLC) is located almost entirely among the tea plantations of central Sri Lanka. The people on the plantations are all-day laborers who live a hand-to-mouth existence. They struggle to provide for their pastors. The LLC has five pastors in the hill country, caring for congregations and for the outreach ministry of pre-schools. Help LCMS World Mission facilitate the economic development of the church, so that the congregations can become self-supporting.
